I have had the privilege of working in partnership with clients toward long and short-term intentions. I work with clients on addictions, relationship effectiveness, guilt/shame, grief/loss, trauma, self-compassion training, existential/life crises, anxiety/stress and mood management, and ultimately skill-development on how to live a more full and vibrant life.
I work with my clients in developing more compassion for self and others, which I have found to be key in bringing about lasting positive change.
Techniques I incorporate in my practice, besides compassionate talk therapy, include mind/body integration work, mindfulness/self-compassion “training,” elements of CBT/DBT/ACT, gratitude practice, strengths identification, and narrative therapy techniques, among others. The adage “seeing is freeing” applies here. Psychologist Carl Rodgers, said, “the curious paradox is that when I accept myself as I am, then I can change.” Resistance and avoidance are common barriers to positive change and growth. I guide my clients toward becoming aware of, acknowledging, and befriending these barriers, so as to transcend them.
As a pragmatic and experiential therapist, I also coach my clients in making achievable lifestyle changes in line with their values, which will encourage self-transformation.
I am licensed as a Clinical Social Worker with the Oregon Board of Social Work, and have a Masters Degree in Social Work from the University of Utah. I have over 13 years of experience counseling individuals (15 and upwards), couples, families and groups from Utah to Washington DC to Abu Dhabi. I honor, celebrate and am fascinated by human diversity in all its forms.
Genuine care and curiosity about my client’s journey fuel my practice and my success as a therapist. I conduct therapy sessions in Spanish when there is a need. I also have a specialty of working with the LGBTQ community, ranging from gender identity and transitions to issues related to coming out and cognitive dissonance related to one’s belief systems (often post-religious).
In certain cases when applicable I work on a sliding fee scale. I also selectively will do TeleHealth/Skype sessions with certain clients where it feels like a good fit.
