Welcome! Counseling is a powerful tool for overcoming obstacles to wellbeing and change. I incorporate a variety of approaches when working with clients, such as psychodynamic psychotherapy, mindfulness meditation, dialectical behavior therapy, and cognitive-behavioral techniques. These models focus on learning how the past affects the present, on acceptance of present experience, and on skills training to change thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.
I collaborate with each client to find a combination of approaches that best fits your personal strengths and needs. My philosophy is also grounded in the emerging understanding of interpersonal neurobiology, which informs the therapy process with an understanding of how our brains function and are constantly changing through our relational experiences.
I hold a master’s degree in clinical psychology from Stephen F. Austin State University (1998). I also have an MA in comparative religion (Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism) from the University of Denver, and a PhD in religion, psychology, and culture from Vanderbilt University. My program integrated psychological and religious studies/theological perspectives to provide a holistic approach to understanding human functioning and existence. My dissertation focused on integrating mindfulness meditation with psychotherapy and developmental neuroscience. I can incorporate spiritual, philosophical, and meditative themes and practices into the therapy session if it interests you.
I am a recent transplant to the beautiful city of Portland and the Pacific Northwest, after growing up in Texas and spending the last nine years in Nashville. I love hikes in nature, live music, following international soccer, and spending quality time with my rascally cat, Doc.
I am supervised by Samuel Chi Baker, MA, NCC, LPC, MAC (LPC #C 1833, MAC # 251142), a licensed professional counselor and master addiction counselor here at Wise Counsel & Comfort.
If you are interested in meeting me with me to explore whether we would be a good fit for therapy, please do contact my work cell # at 615-651-9816. I see clients at Wise Counsel at the NE 60th Avenue/Glisan locations on Tuesdays (5:30 to 8:30pm) and Saturdays (2:00 to 4:00pm).
My standard therapy fee is $40 for a 50-minute session, although I do provide a sliding scale for those in need. I look forward to hearing from you and beginning the rewarding journey of psychotherapy!
